Best Summer Crafts for the Kids
July 17, 2020

Summer is the perfect time for the kids to do just about everything now that school’s out. However, with COVID-19 restrictions in Ontario still in place, there are a handful of places and services that aren’t open for the kids to enjoy. But that doesn’t mean summer won’t be just as fun! Arts and crafts are the perfect summer activity for kids of all ages. Not only does this bring out their artistic side, it also creates a fun bonding experience. We’ve gathered some fun arts and crafts ideas that are perfect for keeping the family entertained this summer! Let us know which ones are your favourites!

  • Tie-Dye Old Shirts Tie-Dye shirts, hoodies and sweatpants have become one of the biggest DIY trends to emerge over the past few months and has kept people entertained while in self-isolation. It’s very easy to do and there are lots of patterns and designs to choose from. The best part is that this can all be done outdoors, which means you don’t have to deal with cleaning up any mess inside your home! Grab some old shirts, coloured dye, rubber bands, gloves, plastic bags and have some fun!Happiness is Homemade has lots of lots of great tips, tricks and instructions on how to have the perfect tie-dye project with the kids.
  • Create a Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder Warmer weather calls for lots and lots of popsicles! Instead of throwing out all of the popsicle sticks after, use them to create something fun. Turn an arts and crafts session into a lesson in nature as well by creating a bird feeder made out of just popsicle sticks! Check Made With Happy for an awesome step-by-step guide on how to make them.
  • Q-Tip Painting Ditch the paint brushes and get crazy with cotton swabs! Q-Tip painting is a great way to let your kids think outside of the box and get creative with their artwork. All you need are cotton swabs, watercolour paint and some paper towels. To make things even more fun, print out templates that your kids can follow along such as butterflies, flowers and rainbows.
  • Papier Mache Papier Mache, which is French for “chewed paper” is a fun and unique way to create a variety of sculptures using strips of newspaper, white glue and water. It can be time consuming because of the drying time, but the process and the final results make it all worthwhile. Instead of making the classic Papier Mache bowls, allow your kids to create something more challenging – visit Crayon Box Chronicles for some ideas!
