How to Bond with Your Family while in Self-Isolation
May 22, 2020

While in self-isolation, you and your family can get stuck in a routine where everyone spends most of their time on their own (the kids spending hours in their own rooms on their phones or watching Netflix, you know the drill). It’s important to take this time to deepen our relationships with our family and spend more time together. Not sure what to do to keep everyone entertained? Read through some of the different ways you can incorporate some family bonding time!

  • Explore a new hobby Take advantage of this time to learn a new hobby with your family! Being in self-isolation gives you the opportunity to get creative with the resources you have at home. Don’t be afraid to try something new! Finding the right hobby that everyone will enjoy can be tricky, but that’s all part of the process. A few fun examples are watercolour painting, growing an herb garden, learning some magic tricks and baking.
  • Stay active and get outside Staying active is another great way to bond with the family! Going for walks around your neighbourhood is a simple and great way to stay active but can also bore the kids easily. Try and incorporate fun little games during your walks. “I Spy” is a classic game that can also be played on foot! There are plenty of walking games available online. Make sure to browse and take a look so you’ll have something ready for your next walk!
  • Do a different activity each week Keep things fun and exciting at home by doing different activities that will keep everyone entertained. Fun tip: write down different indoor activities (movie night, karaoke night, indoor camping, etc.) on separate strips of paper and put them in a bowl. Have a different member of the family draw from the bowl each week, and whatever he or she chooses will be the activity for the day! Doing a draw saves everyone the time from debating on what activity to do. This also adds an element of excitement because no one knows what it will be.
  • Create a vision board Constantly hearing about COVID-19 on the news and being stuck at home isn’t the greatest feeling, and this can take a toll on everyone. Keep things positive by creating vision boards! A vision board is a fun and creative way to express goals and dreams for the future. This is also an excellent tool when it comes to teaching your kids about goal setting. Get things started by asking them simple questions such as “what are some of your biggest dreams?” or “what would you like to do when you’re older?” Remember, there is no right or wrong way to do it. Everyone has free reign - let their creative juices flow!
