How to Relax and Unwind at Home While in Self-Isolation
The country has been on lockdown for almost 2 months due to COVID-19, and by now most of us already have a routine that we’ve been following to keep our days productive. However, the longer we are in self-isolation, the trickier it can get. The line between working and taking some time to yourself can get blurred, which can take toll on your overall wellbeing. It’s important to look after our mental health while balancing work and spending time with the family. Here are some different ways to relax and unwind at home.
- Take a break from social media and all electronic devices
Spending most of your time at home can result in an increase of social media usage. Without realizing it, you can spend hours scrolling through Instagram, Facebook, or watching videos on YouTube. Taking a digital detox frees up your time to relax and focus on activities that are good for the brain and body. This will also help you get a good night’s sleep, which results in better energy levels and overall health. - Set up reminders during your workday to take breaks
It’s easy to get caught up while working from home and we can easily end up staying at our workspace for hours without realizing how much time in the day has flown by. Although staying productive is great, reaching the point of burnout isn’t. Taking breaks at home is just as important as your regular breaks in the office. Taking short breaks can help you stay energized and focused and leaves you mentally and physically refreshed. Set reminders throughout the workday to step away from your computer screen and relax for about 10-15 minutes. Take this time to go for a walk, have a coffee or practice mindfulness exercises. - Meditate
Meditation is proven to have a positive impact on our mental and physical health. It helps improve our sleep, increase our focus and reduce our stress. According to Positive Psychology, meditation establishes a secure connection between our internal and external worlds. It produces a deep state of relaxation, which gives you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits your wellbeing. There are different types of meditation - a few examples are guided meditation, mantra meditation and mindfulness meditation. Calm is an excellent app for helping you get started on meditating! - Start journaling
Remember when you were a kid and used to keep a diary and write “top secret” information down? Whether that was your thing or not, you should consider keeping a journal as an adult because it comes with plenty of benefits. Putting your thoughts and feelings on paper is not only a healthy way to express yourself, it’s also a great stress management and relaxation tool. As you start writing about your day and what you’ve been feeling, your mind clears up, and you start getting in touch with your own thoughts and feelings without any distractions. Set aside some time during the morning or before you go to bed and to get into the habit of journaling regularly. Remember, there doesn’t have to be any structure when it comes to journaling. It’s your own safe space, and you can write anything that you want.
