Taking Care of Your Mental Health While in Self-Isolation

Taking Care of Your Mental Health While in Self-Isolation
April 22, 2020

During these uncertain and unprecedented times, staying home is important now more than ever. Although doing our part to ensure we’re flattening the curve is crucial, staying indoors for days on end can take a toll on your mental health – especially with the never-ending news about COVID-19. It’s important to take a step back to care for your mental health during this time to ensure your mind and body stay healthy. Here are some different ways to take care of your mental health while in self isolation.

  1. Stick to your routine as much as you can According to the American Psychological Association, maintaining a daily routine can help both adults and children have a sense of order in their lives, despite the unfamiliarity of isolation due to the coronavirus. It also helps you stay organized and on track during the day, so you won’t feel like you’re being unproductive. Incorporate regular daily activities as much as you can in your routine.
  2. Stay active Regular exercise can improve mental health and reduce anxiety and depression by helping to release feel-good chemicals called endorphins throughout the body. Sure, binge watching an entire series on Netflix seems like a great idea, but also keep in mind that it’s important for physical and mental wellness to keep your body moving regularly. Take some time out of your day to do simple at-home exercises and stretches. YouTube is a great resource for videos that are perfect for everyone of all different fitness levels!
  3. Get fresh air and enjoy nature when possible Just because we are in self-isolation doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy nature and get the sunlight that we need. Getting some fresh air can improve your mood and help you clear your mind from everything that’s happening by giving you a change of scenery, as well as make you feel revitalized by providing your body with increased oxygen and vitamin D. As long as you’re practicing social distancing, go for a stroll around your area and bask in the sunshine and fresh air.
  4. Practice mindfulness exercises Constantly hearing and reading about the coronavirus can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety in our daily lives. Put your mind at ease by practicing daily relaxation and mindfulness exercises. A few examples are meditation, visualization, deep breathing, and mindfulness colouring. Headspace is an excellent app that teaches you mindfulness skills in just a few minutes a day!
  5. Stay connected with family and friends Although technology has been our best friend when it comes to keeping us entertained throughout this pandemic, the feeling of loneliness can kick in since we’re away from our loved ones. That’s why it’s important to stay connected with them as much as possible. There are plenty of ways to stay connected – video calling and sending a message on social media platforms are just a few examples. Keeping in touch and letting them know you’re thinking of them will not only make you feel better, but they will as well!
