Moving with Pets – Things You Should Consider

Moving with Pets – Things You Should Consider
August 11, 2021

Moving homes is complicated enough without the added concern of how to properly accommodate your pets. Between preparing for the move, safely transporting them and introducing them to this new environment, it can be overwhelming to know where to begin. To make this transition as seamless as possible, we’ve outlined some tips for moving with your pets at each stage of the process.

Before the Move

If you’re moving to another city or country, it’s important to find a new vet prior to moving. You can contact your current vet to see if they recommend a clinic in your new neighbourhood and to get any records and prescriptions transferred as well. While you’re packing, prepare an easily accessible box of food, litter, toys and grooming tools to ensure your pets are taken care of during the first days in your new home.

During the Move

Ideally, transporting your pets in your own vehicle is best. Based on the size of your pet, you can keep them in an appropriate carrier or kennel in the back seat, as long as they are properly secured and won’t be jostled around. It also may reduce anxiety to cover them with a blanket so that they cannot see the changing environment. While driving, make sure to stop frequently and have their food and water within reach.

The option of driving with your pets is not available for everyone, though. If you are transporting them on a plane, they are typically placed in a separate cargo area for the duration of the flight, or they may be allowed to ride alongside the passengers. We suggest contacting your airline for more details on flying with pets.

After the Move

Keep your pets in their carriers until you are in your home and any movers are gone. You don’t want to overwhelm your pets and risk them escaping and potentially getting lost in this new neighbourhood. For the first few days, try to keep them in rooms that are mostly unpacked. This reduces the environmental changes they will experience and allow them to be introduced slowly to the entire house. Finally, make sure to update their tags or microchip information with your new address and phone number.
